Tiger Goni – Sundarbans Saga
Outline
Tiger Goni is a documentary that unveils the extraordinary story of Abdul Gani, a local hero in the Ganges Delta, known to the people of the Sundarbans as “Tiger Goni.” He shares his home, the vast mangrove forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, with the world’s largest population of Bengal tigers. In this southern part of Bangladesh communities are living in constant tension with nature.

As the leader of the Satkhira Range Tiger Response Team, Gani has risked his life to rescue hundreds of villagers from tiger attacks. His missions have taken him deep into the forest, face-to-face with tigers, to save injured fishermen and honey collectors — and, heartbreakingly, to retrieve the bodies of those who didn’t survive. In the past decade alone, over 500 lives have been lost.
Even after his official role with the conservation group WildTeam ended in 2019, Gani continued his work, driven by a deep sense of duty to protect both people and tigers. His story is not only one of courage, but of compassion and building community resilience.
Tiger Goni is a tribute to those who live on the edge of survival, and to one man’s unwavering commitment to justice, community, and coexistence. As climate change reshapes the Sundarbans, rising tides and shrinking habitats bring humans closer to tigers — and tigers closer to humans — intensifying the fragile balance between danger and dependence.
