XRBT: Extended Reality Black Theatre

Outline

XRBT is a virtual- and augmented-reality (VR/AR) based immersive theatre experience that brings Australian First Nations story worlds into hybrid physical/digital spaces. It uses real-time motion capture, 3D projection mapping and ambisonic sound driven live by performers. Led by Troy Russell (Biripai/Kamilaroi), a Sydney based Indigenous musician, theatre and film maker along with media artist Adam Nash and dancers Dylan Singh (Wiradjuri) and Brent Watkins (Gunai Kurnai, Noongar and Yamatji).

The team at the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies has been collaborating with the XRBT team using live motion capture and game engine technology to bring to life scenes based on Kamilaroi artist Elaine Russell’s paintings and books. The aim of the project is to develop a full length extended reality theatre experience. The team are planning an ARC Linkage project to further investigate Indigenous storytelling through emerging immersive technology.
