IN-VOCATION たまおこし (3D) with Yumi Umiumare

This project used volumetric capture of Yumi Umiumare performing aspects of her character to be part of the live performance IN-VOCATION たまおこし
Exploring movement, text and voice, through 呪術 Jujutsu, Japanese notion of shamanism, translated as ‘Magic’. The intention of the event is to open up our new possibilities of interweaving between arts, space, human, nature and spirituality.
たまおこし（Tama Okoshi : Tama means soul, Okoshi means upheaval or awaken).

IN-VOCATION たまおこし (3D) was presented at Dancehouse, Melbourne as part of FRAME, a biennial of dance, March 2023. The short 3D film was screened at the mid point of the live performance, tying the two halves together.
The audience wore 3D glasses to view the 3D film which ran for 4 minutes 25 seconds while the performers transitioned from the first part of the performance to the second. The film introduced some of the main aspects of the central character. The volumetric capture and 3D projection aimed to give dimensional depth to the viewing, spatially blending the film with the live performance.
There are four scenes representing different aspects of one of the central characters. The backgrounds used stylised geometry and stark, contrasting colours to portray the different energy of the character. This artwork aimed to embed a volumetric 3D game engine generated film within a live performance as a piece of theatrical “magic”, a device to enable an unexpected theatrical transition.
This NTRO is the 3D volumetric film within the live performance only and the live performance components are not part of this submission. The 3 performances at Dancehouse were sold out (venue capacity 130). John McCormick and Yumi Umiumare received a grant from the Australia Council (now Creative Australia) to develop this work.
